Most orthodontic issues aren’t true emergencies — and many can be handled at home.
It’s normal for braces or appliances to occasionally feel uncomfortable, especially right after adjustments or when something comes loose. Our goal is to keep you comfortable and confident managing minor issues until we can see you in the office.
If something feels off or you’re unsure what to do, don’t hesitate to call — our team will guide you through simple solutions and schedule a visit if needed.
Common Situations & Quick Fixes
Protruding Wire
If a wire is poking your cheek or gum, gently push it down with the tip of a pencil eraser or cover it with orthodontic wax for comfort.
Loose Bracket, Band, or Wire
If a bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and apply wax to prevent irritation. If a wire has come loose, you can try to reposition it gently with clean tweezers. If that doesn’t help, simply cover the area with wax and let us know.
General Soreness or Tenderness
It’s common for teeth to feel tender for a few days after getting braces or after an adjustment. Rinsing with warm salt water can soothe the area, and over-the-counter pain relief can be used if needed. Wax can also help if the braces irritate your cheeks or lips — they’ll toughen up quickly as your mouth adjusts.
When to Reach Out
While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, you should contact our office if:
- You experience significant pain that doesn’t improve with home care
 - You swallow or believe you may have swallowed a small part of your appliance
 - You’re unsure how to manage an issue on your own

If a small piece of your appliance is swallowed, it will usually pass naturally within a few days and does not require treatment. However, if you experience persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or chest discomfort, seek medical evaluation promptly — a chest X-ray may be needed to confirm location and ensure safety.
We’re always happy to help and can walk you through what to do next — whether it’s a quick at-home fix or scheduling a short visit for repair.
