How to Care for Your Braces: Tips for Success

  • Providence Orthodontics
  • August 29, 2024

Proper care for your braces is vital for achieving optimal results. At Providence Orthodontics, we are dedicated to supporting you through each phase of your orthodontic treatment. Here, we share practical advice to ensure effective treatment and to help you avoid complications throughout your orthodontic journey.

Brushing Techniques With Braces

Keeping up with excellent oral hygiene is essential when wearing braces. Here are a few tips to prevent food particles and plaque buildup around the teeth and gums:

  • Brush After Eating: It’s ideal to brush your teeth after every meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, carefully cleaning around the brackets and along the gumline.
  • Use an Interdental Brush: These brushes can reach spots a regular toothbrush might miss, particularly around brackets and wires. Incorporate this tool into your routine for a more thorough cleaning.
  • Don’t Overlook the Tongue and Roof: Cleaning your tongue and the roof of your mouth helps eliminate bacteria and freshens your breath.

Flossing With Braces: Techniques & Tools

Flossing is just as important as brushing, although it can be more challenging with braces.

  • Employ a Floss Threader: A floss threader helps guide the floss under the wires. Gently move the floss up and down along the sides of both teeth.
  • Consider Water Flossers: These tools are a convenient and effective option for removing food particles and plaque from between your teeth and around your braces.
  • Floss Daily: Make it a habit to floss at least once daily to maintain gum health and prevent cavities.

Dietary Choices & Braces

What you eat can significantly affect the health of your braces and teeth. Certain foods can damage your braces or become lodged, creating discomfort and potential issues.

  • Avoid Hard Foods: Steer clear of nuts, hard candies, and ice, as they can break or bend wires and brackets.
  • Be Cautious with Sticky Treats: Sticky candies like toffees and gum can become stuck in your braces, making them hard to clean and potentially dislodging brackets.
  • Limit Sugary Items: Sugar contributes to plaque buildup and tooth decay. If you indulge in sugary foods or drinks, brush your teeth soon afterward.
  • Opt for Soft Foods: Foods that require minimal chewing, such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables, are gentle on braces and easier to clean.

Regular Visits & Open Communication

Routine orthodontic appointments are crucial for tracking your progress and adjusting your braces as needed.

  • Attend All Scheduled Appointments: These visits allow your orthodontist to assess tooth movement and make timely adjustments for optimal results.
  • Discuss Any Concerns: Should you experience discomfort, broken brackets, or loose wires, contact us immediately. Promptly addressing issues can prevent complications and keep your treatment on track.
  • Follow Your Orthodontist’s Guidance: Your orthodontist at Providence Orthodontics will provide personalized recommendations based on your unique needs. Following their advice is key to a successful treatment outcome.

I can't let the recent barrage of positive reviews eclipse my truly amazing experience. After all, I did have a complex double jaw surgery with a high-profile craniofacial surgeon and it's not everyday that your basic neighborhood orthodontist gets to capitalize on such an opportunity. As you can imagine, the orthodontic part of my treatment was taken very seriously by Dr. Romani and Im excited to let people know exactly what that treatment entailed.

Dr. Romani is the type to leave a review for a nail salon and demand they update their signage because a policy change cost her fifty cents. That is the exact kind of energy you want from a doctor when you're undergoing a major surgery that cuts and rearranges your facial bones. I would post a before and after, but Dr. Romani let me know my facial aesthetics weren't quite up to her standards, so I guess just go look at her own face and judge for yourself. Who cares about the $30k I spent on my surgery to breathe and sleep better? Dr. Romani knew there were more important matters at hand, like ignoring my surgeon's orders to remove my braces while simultaneously trying to rebrand herself using his credentials.

Dr. Romani spent nearly a year post-op "fixing" a 1mm midline that was, as it turns out, impossible to correct due to my thin bone and severe crowding, a fact I stumbled upon accidentally. I guess I shouldve tried harder to ignore the biological reality of my own anatomy. Sometimes the amount of time you spend $ in braces is more important to Dr. Romani than actually being able to reach a clinical goal, especially when there's a famous surgeon involved. Don't worry if the elastics she gives you, the ones you have to change yourself, don't actually produce any measurable progress, that just might be the point.

It could also be the fact that Dr. Romani told me she couldnt interpret my cbct scan but I totally get it because I couldn't interpret my own scan either when Dr. Romani suggested I do it instead. And given that she claimed the "bulk of the work" was going to be done by her after I had my jaw surgery, it's easy to see how being able to interpret that scan simply didn't matter.

I'm just super happy that when I twice said I wanted to end treatment, my decision was fully respected by Dr. Romani in the only way she seems to know how. Watching Dr. Romani let her emotions and entitlement get the best of her simply because I said NO to more "treatment" was quite the experience. I'm sure the issues I now have with my teeth and bite have absolutely nothing to do with what Dr. Romani did AFTER I revoked consent.

Shout out to Dr. Collins who removed my braces without the full story. It must be nice to work with a colleague who'll use your license as a shield to start a treatment plan that has no clinical purpose for her own agenda.

The office staff also deserve a huge shout-out. At the end of my "treatment", they missed every single one of my phone calls, but they were kind enough to text me in real-time to let me know they could see I was calling. Even Dr. Romani herself needed some of my help gathering my medical records because she wasn’t quite sure what a medical record actually was, but I completely understood her confusion and the delay because it can be hard to release records to a patient when you need to alter them first.

Anyways, I actually enjoyed my time in braces so much I’m seriously debating whether to pay another $8k for a bone graft procedure just so I can get braces again. And I'm happy to report I've been compliant with wearing my retainers, they just happen to be holding my teeth in a position that is not compliant with my surgical plan.

Unfortunately, my next round of braces won't be with Dr. Romani. I prefer a dentist who doesn't give my teeth a parting gift just because I dared to dictate the end of my own treatment. And I would name my surgeon, but I'm sure he doesnt want his name associated with someone who doesn't know how to end "treatment" without that treatment becoming, well, how should I say this, not treatment anymore

I don't typically write many reviews, but felt compelled to write a long overdue review of Providence Orthodontics. My situation was coming from an adult perspective, as someone who never had orthodontics as a child. I had some stubborn teeth, particularly a bottom tooth. I genuinely can't state enough positive descriptions here about Dr. Collins and every member of her team. As some may be aware, orthodontics is really a long process and a "marathon" not a sprint. I think that is what they excel at is the process of it all; from consultation, adjustments, advice, listening, humor and building a trusted relationship all along the way. I started out with Invisalign and ended up finishing with braces to "get the job done." Dr. Collins really was focused on getting the best outcome for me and if that meant extra time that was okay. In a job that could easily become a "number" in, Dr. Collins makes you feel like you are the only patient she is seeing that day. My recommendation to adult patients is that part of the job of orthodontics is on "you" as the part of the process- meaning you need to follow the process and not being inpatient. I am happy I chose Providence Orthodontics and highly recommend them as a "Sure bet" to go with!
