At the first visit we take digital records with our iTero scanner — a fast 3D scan instead of putty impressions — and Dr. Collins reviews the findings with you directly: what is going on, whether it needs treatment, and what the options are if it does.
For children, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, and we follow that guidance. It rarely means braces at 7. Most children that age simply get monitored until enough permanent teeth are in; a smaller number benefit from short interceptive orthodontics that guides jaw growth while it is still easy to influence. We will give you a clear recommendation rather than a menu. Fixed braces work whether or not anyone remembers them, and aligners only work when they are in — that difference decides many cases, and we will say which side yours falls on.
Fitting Treatment Around A Johnston Schedule
Orthodontics is a series of short appointments spread over months, not a weekly obligation. Adjustment visits take a fraction of an hour and fall several weeks apart, and aligner check-ups are even less frequent. - Is early treatment always necessary? No, and we will tell you when it is not. Most 7-year-olds we see need monitoring, not appliances.
- How much does treatment cost? It depends on the complexity of the case. Our team reviews payment options in full before treatment begins, including payment plans and a 5% courtesy for payment in full.
- What about retainers? They are part of every case. Teeth drift for life, and retainer wear is what protects the result.
Living With Treatment
Braces require a few habit changes and no heroics: brush after every meal, floss daily, skip hard and sticky foods, and wear elastics exactly as prescribed — that last one corrects the bite, and skipping it is the most common reason treatment runs long. Aligner patients need 20 to 22 hours of wear a day and a case they actually use, since aligners wrapped in a napkin end up in the trash.
